This paper presents a 28Gb/s transceiver with an electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) for high-speed directly modulated lasers (DMLs). DMLs induce power-dependent frequency chirp at the laser output, which causes severe chromatic dispersion as well as pattern dependency on the received signal. The proposed EDC-based clock and data recovery (CDR) IC compensates for both transient- and adiabatic-chirp in DMLs via a pattern-dependent pulse-shaping filter and a double-sampling decision feedback equalizer (DFE) with an on-chip eye-opening monitor (EOM). The adaptive EDC improves the receiver sensitivity at a bit error rate (BER) of$10^{-6}$ by 1.3dB over 3km at 28Gb/s, where transient-chirp is dominant, and by more than 7dB over 105km at 10Gb/s, where adiabatic-chirp is dominant. The dual-lane EDC transceiver IC, fabricated in a 40nm CMOS process and packaged in a flip-chip ball grid array (BGA), consumes 236.1mW from a 0.9V supply at 28Gb/s. The IC embeds the BER and eye-opening self-test capability.
