Under normal reactor operating conditions, deterioration of materials due to irradiation damage of reactor structures poses a risk to the safety of nuclear power plants. Zirconium alloys, which are core materials of nuclear fuel cladding, have a limited lifetime due to irradiation damage deteriorating oxidation resistance and mechanical strength. Recent studies in the development of nuclear fuel cladding have focused on fabricating protective coating layers on the surface of zirconium alloys. In this study, a nanoporous oxide layer was fabricated on the surface of the zirconium alloy fuel cladding through anodization technique. In order to evaluate the effect of proton irradiation on the prepared oxide layer, mechanical properties were measured in microscopic scale and the changes of atomic arrangement caused by heat treatment and proton irradiation were observed.
