Over-engagement with digital devices is causing various problems such as work/study interruptions and sleep disorders. Users often experience difficulties in achieving behavioral goals related to digital device use due to the failure of self-regulation. Most of the prior studies approached this problem indirectly with various self-regulatory strategies such as self-reflection and social support. In this thesis, I propose a direct approach that restricts or degrades interactivity between the user and the problematic device/apps, aiming to reduce the digital device use. Toward this goal, I conceptualize the interaction restraint system framework and develop three interaction restraint systems (PomodoLock, GoalKeeper, and LocknType) with different lockout mechanisms to understand their impacts on digital device use and user experiences, including potential side-effects (i.e., negative emotions, workarounds). The study results reveal that lockout with moderate intensity is most effective in reducing the digital device use, supporting self-regulation. Overly strong lockout mechanisms are more effective, but cause a high level of negative emotions. Also, weak or non-lockout mechanisms that heavily rely on one's self-regulatory efforts are low in its effect and usefulness. Based on the experiment results, I provide guidelines for designing an interaction restraint system that maximizes positive effects but minimizes the negative effects in reducing digital device use.
