Investigations on anion transport behavior through Nafion membranes : (The) impact of pretreatment on the size of water nanochannel and the performance of ZnBr redox flow battery나피온 막의 음이온 이동 특성에 대한 연구: 전처리 과정이 이온교환채널 크기 및 징크브롬 레독스 흐름 전지의 성능에 미치는 영향

This work describes how the water channel of Nafion changes depending on pretreatment and how the size of it affects the transport behavior of anions. Nafion membranes have been widely used in many electrochemical device as a typical cation exchange membrane. This study demonstrates that pretreatment increases anion transport as well as cation and water transport. Nafion212 was pretreated at various temperature conditions in order to investigate the effect of pretreatment. Small angle X-ray scattering results of the pretreated Nafion 212 membranes indicate the expansion of water cluster in the pretreated Nafion 212 membrane and support the understanding of increased water uptake, swelling ratio and ionic conductivity as the pretreatment temperature increased. The ion chromatography and ion transference number were measured for transport behavior of anion. The result clearly indicates that the Nafion with high water content leads to enhanced anion transfer. The correlation between the anion transport mechanism and the size of the water channel size was described in detail. The improved bi-ionic transport significantly reduces anion concentration gradient on both side of Naifon membrane, leading to successful cell operation. Consequently, as an effect of low bromine permeability and low area specific resistance, the pretreated Nafion 212 membrane presents 11.3% improvement in energy efficiency.
