An acoustic-based indoor and outdoor environments detection method for ubiquitous positioning system = 유비쿼터스 위치추적 시스템을 위한 음향 기반 실내 및 실외 환경 인식 기법

A ubiquitous positioning system, which can provide reliable location information both on indoor and outdoor environments, has not been realized yet. There are many hurdles to overcome to implement the ubiquitous positioning system. Among the hurdles, detection of indoor/outdoor environments, and then switching seamlessly from GPS (Global Positioning System) to IPS (Indoor Positioning System), or vice versa, is one of problems to be addressed. In order to realize the seamless indoor/outdoor positioning handover, a fast and accurate environments detection method is imperative. In this paper, we propose an acoustic-based indoor and outdoor environments detection method which can be effortlessly applied to commercial smartphones for the realization of the seamless positioning handover for the ubiquitous positioning system. The proposed method consists of four steps. In the first step, a special sound probe, i.e., chirp signal is generated. In the second step, the sound probe is propagated through an embedded speaker, and then collected back with an embedded microphone. The retrieved probe usually shows different characteristics from the original sound probe depending on the surrounding environment. In the third step, the retrieved probe is analyzed to search for special acoustic characteristics, such as massive reverberation created by the walls and ceiling, which can be observed only in indoor spaces. The searched acoustic characteristics are represented as score values. The reverberation score values are used for indoor/outdoor classification in the fourth step. When we tested the proposed method at 46 indoor and outdoor locations, roughly 96% indoor/outdoor detection accuracy was achieved. Also, the method outperformed the previous positioning handover schemes in detecting indoor/outdoor transitions as it reduced the detection delay by about 75%.
