Motion estimation (ME) and occlusion handling are important processes for motion-compensated frame interpolation (MCFI) because they influence the quality of an intermediate frame. This paper proposes an MCFI method using hierarchical ME composed of a modified 3-D recursive search. In addition, an adaptive frame interpolation method is proposed by grouping MVs, refining MVs and detecting blocks in occluded regions. The experiment results show that the proposed method outperforms the other MCFI methods in terms of the quality of the intermediate frames.
