Nano and micro photonic structures found in nature have intriguing functions. For instance, compound eyes consist of numerous photo units to provide wide angle of view, successive layer of reflectors in Morpho butterfly’s wing provides unique iridescence color, and nanopillared surface of moth eyes provides reduction of specular reflection from the eye. The novel structures can give insight for developing new optical devices with state-of-art nanoarchitectures. In particular, the nanopillar arrays on insects provide inspiration for this study. Large-area nanopillar arrays reduce the optical impedance, thus provide antireflection from surfaces such as the moth eyes and cicada wings. In this study, biophotonic surfaces have been developed by combining nanophotonic structures inspired from the nature. The glass substrates contain biophotonic surfaces, i.e., large-area glass nanopillar arrays (GNA) on single or double-side of the substrates. Thin silver film deposition followed by high temperature annealing provided large-area silver nanoisland arrays. The GNA were constructed by reactive ion etching process which utilized the silver nanoislands as etching masks. The fill factor and height of the glass nanopillars can be controlled by nanoisland formation and etching time. The GNA with 0.5 fill factor and 130 nm in height were constructed on the substrate surfaces, which provide antireflection for diverse surrounding media. Spontaneous filling of media into interstitial spaces between nanopillars spontaneously controls effective refractive index of GNA layer to meet antireflection conditions. The biophotonic signal, i.e., fluorescence signals were improved over 15 percent by the GNA. Moreover, the GNA immersed in solution media also have enabled exceptionally high-contrast imaging by complete removal of reflection from solution-substrate interfaces. Metal deposition on the GNA can transform the antireflective surfaces into plasmonic surfaces. Metal nanoislands wer...
