We report bi-layered hydrogel microcarrier materials which can capture/release target materials by swelling of hydrogels. Since hydrogel microparticle consists of responsive swelling layer and solid supporting layer, particle swells anisotropically which enables transformation of particle from 2-D to 3-D structure. Hydrogel microparticles were fabricated by using two-step lithography process in the microchannels. Then, transformation behavior of microparticles was observed for various pH conditions and compared with mathematic study. Finally, 1-μm latex microspheres were introduced in order to demonstrate capture/release of target materials under controlled environment.
