In the wireless ad hoc network, a node can directly communicate with another one within its radio coverage or uses the near nodes as intermediate nodes to relay or forward packets from the source toward the destination. The focus of this thesis is in delivering non real time (NRT) data over the wireless ad hoc network. In particular, we deal with the ad hoc network that employs IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols [1]. NRT data is delay insensitive; however, it needs to be transmitted as soon as possible. Thus, our objective is to minimize the time span for completing transmission of NRT data to the destination (i.e., minimizing packet delay).
Our scheme is to apply the concept of "frequency reuse" to IEEE 802.11 MAC. A key idea is to differentiate each node``s backoff time with respect to the hop distance from the source. The scheme reduces the total transmission time for delivering a given amount of non real time data, about 10-30%, compared to IEEE 802.11 MAC.
