Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been considered as reinforcements for polymer, ceramic and metal matrices owing to their remarkable strength and high stiffness. In this study, CNT/alumina nanocomposites have been fabricated through molecular level mixing process for CNT-implanted amorphous alumina nanocomposite powders and followed by consolidation of these nanocomposite powders using in-situ spark plasma sintering process (SPS). During the molecular level mixing process for CNT-implanted amorphous alumina powder, functionalized CNTs interacted with aluminum ions in a particular solvent in which the CNTs can be homogeneously dispersed. The CNT-implanted amorphous alumina powder becomes fully densified CNT/alumina nanocomposite with crystallized alumina matrix during SPS process. The CNTs are homogeneously dispersed within alumina matrix with strong interfacial bonding caused by chemical interaction between CNT and aluminum ions, which can be verified by FTIR spectrum. Using this process, three kinds of CNT/alumina nanocomposites with 1.4, 1.6 and 3 vol.% CNTs have been fabricated. It is observed that both Vicker``s hardness and fracture toughness of the alumina matrix are enhanced with the increase in the volume fraction of CNTs in the CNT/alumina nanocomposite. There are two main factors which control the hardness of the CNT/alumina nanocomposite - homogeneous dispersion of CNTs in the alumina matrix and the existence of strong interfacial bonding between CNTs and the alumina matrix. These two factors facilitate the load transfer efficiency from the alumina matrix to the CNTs in the CNT/alumina nanocomposite. The strengthening effect of CNTs can be verified using the Hall-Petch relationship which is based upon the correlation between alumina matrix grain size and the hardness of the nanocomposite. A comparison between Hall-Petch relationship of pure alumina and CNT/alumina nanocomposite shows that the nanocomposite shows a higher hardness value than pure alumina ...
