In this thesis, network resource allocation for multicasts in wireless networks are dealt with in a cross-layer perspective. Based on the analysis of multicasts in a wireless environment, the interaction among a physical, a medium access control, and a network layer is exploited to make better use of the resources of wireless communication systems. Following an introduction of a multicast in a wireless communication network in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 addresses a routing issue in a wireless mesh network with Multi-rate and Multi-Radio (MR2) features. The aim of this study is to reduce the end-to-end transmission delay for reliable multicasts, and Multi-Rate and Multi-Radio (MR2) characteristics are applied to achieve this goal. MR2_ETT, a new routing metric, is first introduced to find an efficient multicast routing tree. It is used in an on-demand routing protocol and an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation that are proposed in this study. Chapter 3 presents a rate and power allocation scheme applying a superposition coding and a scalable video coding. It consists of two subtopics. First, research on an optimal number of superimposed layers on a unit resource is conducted to evaluated the performance of the superposition coding scheme when the transmit power of the base station is finite. Second, we propose a rate and power allocation scheme, which is an extended version of the previous work. It aims at managing resources of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems. Finally, the thesis is concluded in Chapter 4. It summarizes the main ideas and the significant results of the studies. It also mentions about the ongoing and further research.eng
