Wireless communication is especially vulnerable to eavesdropping due to the broadcast nature of wireless medium. The study on the physical layer security aims at developing the secure transmission schemes by exploiting physical layer resources and techniques. Unlike the classical approaches based on the cryptographical solution, it has a merit to provide the unconditionally perfect secrecy which is measured by information-theoretical metrics. In this dissertation, focusing on analyzing the role of the multiuser diversity in the physical layer security, we examine physical layer security issues by exploring two directions, characterizing the secrecy capacity (or rates) and proposing the practical secure transmission scheme. First, theoretical limits of the secrecy capacity is analyzed under the correlated fading wiretap channel models. We extend this results to the multiuser case and develop the secure communication protocol for broadcast block fading channels. Contrary to the ordinalry communicaion results, we obtain the opposing results in our model that the multiuser diversity negatively affect the secre transmission in a way to reduce the achievable secrecy rate. Second, the practical secure transmission scheme is illustrated by studying the eavesdropping issue in over-deployed wireless sensor networks. Since the channel coding scheme achieving the secrecy capacity has a problem in implementation issue, the perfect secrecy in the wiretap channel model is beyond the scope of current technologies. Thus, we propose a novel secure cooperative transmission scheme achieving the information-theoretically perfect secrecy without channel coding techniques in this part. The proposed scheme utilize the random behavior of wireless channels in the form of the multiuser diversity in a way that only the sensors of strong and weak channel gains report their decisions in a predetermined way based on type-based multiple access protocol. We show that carefully design diffe...
