Recently, the number of subscribers to wireless communication systems increases dramatically and various traffic services, such as voice and Internet data etc, are required by mobile users. Therefore, the future wireless communication should support integrated traffics and utilize the limited channel resource efficiently. For these requirements, the design of an appropriate media access control (MAC) protocol plays a critical role among research issues for the future wireless communication systems. In this dissertation, we focus on MAC protocols which can support integrated voice/data traffics efficiently for both time division multiple access (TDMA) system and code division multiple access (CDMA) system. First, we propose dynamic TDMA with priority-based request packet transmission scheme (D-TDMA/PRPTS) which applies priority-based request packet transmission scheme (PRPTS) as a new request packet transmission scheme instead of conventional slotted ALOHA (S-ALOHA). PRPTS gives priority to voice request packets and transmits the voice request packets preferentially. Due to this feature, D-TDMA/PRPTS can enhance the system capacity of voice users of conventional D-TDMA with speech activity detectors (SADs). We evaluate the performance of D-TDMA/PRPTS using both analysis and simulation. We formulate an appropriate Markov model and present analytical results for voice packet dropping probability and channel utilization for voice traffic. The simulations are also used to verify the analysis and to further investigate voice-data integration performances. Second, we move our concentration on CDMA which is considered as an attractive MAC protocol for future wireless communication systems. We propose enhanced reservation code multiple access (E-RCMA) which enhanced the voice packet dropping probability performance of reservation code multiple access (RCMA). RCMA is recognized as a promising MAC protocol based on slotted direct-sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) for both local wi...
