Maintaining kidney health, which contributes to maintaining homeostasis in the body, is important, but drug-induced acute kidney injury is caused as a side effect of some drugs used to treat diseases, which may rather threaten kidney health. Cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a well-known example. Cisplatin is an anticancer drug widely used in the treatment of several cancers, but it has nephrotoxicity as a major side effect, causing CI-AKI in 20-30% of patients receiving it. Since there is no specific treatment for CI-AKI yet, and it is known that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammation are mainly involved in the outbreak, this paper studied whether nanoparticles synthesized from bilirubin could prevent CI-AKI. The Bilirubin Nanoparticles used are unique materials developed in the laboratory in which this study was conducted, and are synthesized using bilirubin, an natural antioxidant in the body, and exhibit ROS-scavenging effect and anti-inflammatory effect.
