The relatively favorable interaction between polycarbonate (PC) and styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer matrix of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer apparently makes it possible to produce commercially useful materials without any compatibilizer. However, these uncompatibilized PC/ABS blends undergo significant dispersed phase particle coalescence in the melt state under certain molding conditions, and this leads to a significant deterioration of the properties of the blend, especially at the weld line. It is generally known that stabilization of the domain morphology would be beneficial to weld line strength. However, it appears that there was little study on the effects of the processing conditions and the compatibilizers on the morphology and the mechanical properties of the welded regions of immiscible or partially miscible polymer blend. In this study, the effects of increasing the viscosity of dispersed domain and incorporating reactive and non-reactive compatibilizers on the morphology and the mechanical properties at the weld line of PC/ABS = 64/40 (wt/wt) blends were investigated The influences of processing temperature (240~280℃) were also studied. In Chapter 2, the influence of incorporating high molecular weight SAN on the weld line characteristics of PC/ABS blends, i.e., PC/g-ABS/SAN blends, was studied. Well dispersed ABS domain just at the weld line below V-notch and coarse morphology at the region behind the weld line were observed in the PC/ABS. When tensile stress was applied perpendicular to the weld line, the fracture, initiated from the V-notch at the surface, propagated along the weak region behind the weld part where domain phase coalescence was significant due to the poor compatibility between PC and SAN. It was also found that domain morphology near the weld line became stable with increasing the molecular weight of SAN in ABS domain phase. Therefore, mechanical strength of the sample with weld line also increased. Phase ...
