A SiC tile/Al-SiCp hybrid composite was fabricated via a liquid-press process. The residual stress between the SiC tile and Al7075 matrix was studied using neutron diffraction. To evaluate the residual stress precisely, the lattice spacing values of the as-received SiC tile, Al7075, and SiC particles were measured and compared with the lattice spacing of the SiC tile/Al-SiCp hybrid composite. Residual stress is generated in the composites during the fabrication process because SiC and Al7075 have different intrinsic thermal expansion coefficients. The results of this work indicate that the SiC tile had compressive residual stress and Al7075 had tensile residual stress in each component, which can enhance the ballistic protection capability of the hybrid composite.
