In this thesis, the novel edge type backlight unit is proposed and demonstrated in order to re-duce power consumption of display and improve contrast ratio. Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have been widely used in display market because of low cost, the easy accessibility of the large area, long lifetime and high resolution. In spite of the advantages of LCDs, they have suffered from some draw-backs: high power consumption and low contrast ratio compared to organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Especially, high power consumption issue is a crucial issue in mobile devices that demand on high performance for a long time in limited battery. Therefore, many studies to reduce power consump-tion in LCDs have been introduced. Local dimming is a kind of methods for energy saving, which is the technique that can locally control luminance of backlight unit (BLU) to reduce dispensable power con-sumption and improve contrast ratio. In general, the backlight unit can be classified as two methods; direct type and edge type. In the direct type, LED sources are placed behind display as two-dimension array arrangement, which leads to efficient local dimming. Therefore conventional LCDs have used backlight unit of the direct type for local dimming. However, since the direct-type has a critical disad-vantage in thick thickness, this method is not appropriate to mobile devices. For this reason, the edge type that has advantage in slim thickness is recently researched for local dimming of mobile applica-tions. Nevertheless the previous researches have something in common in that LEDs are only placed at the edge of display. This is considered a fundamental obstacle to achieving high efficiency of local dimming. In this paper, two-dimensional local dimming method is proposed by using a two-dimensionally distributed edge-lit LEDs. Also, additional methods are used to solve luminance uni-formity issue and obtain the minimal thickness of backlight unit. As a first demonstration of the proposed structure, simulation results show that the proposed model can operate efficiently without reduction of luminance uniformity and much loss of leakage light. Next, the measurement results of the fabricated backlight unit illustrates that this proposed backlight unit has high benefits: low power consumption and high power consumption. Above all, The thickness of the fabricated is less than 1mm, which is the thinnest local dimming backlight unit as far as I know
