Modern smart TVs supports highly interactive features bridging devices and users, and supports the use of various applications over an internet connection with advanced AI technology. Traditionally, technology acceptance and user experience (UX) research in information systems (IS) were applied to enhancing the perceived usefulness and usability of users and evaluating the perceived quality of IT products and services. In recent IS research, the technology acceptance and UX of smart devices have been studied, yet there have been few studies developing instrument scales to describe the concept of smart TV UX and various associated smartness functions. In addition, users can perform various new functions by interacting with smart TVs, but they are not fully utilizing the smart functions of smart TVs. Therefore, the study on the UX and smartness of smart TVs is needed. The purpose of this study includes 1) determining elements related to smart TV UX through experiments in both the laboratory and real-home environments; 3) determining the effects of smart TV UX elements on user satisfaction and usage intention through structural modeling; and 4) understanding the smartness effect and comparing such effects with generic UXs. The major results of this study will include the following: We will identify and verify various UX elements related to smart TVs using a multiple method rather than a single approach. Next, we will produce appropriate and valid questionnaire items regarding UX elements. We will also examine the effect of smart TV UX and smartness elements on user satisfaction and usage intention through structural model analysis. Also, through the comparison of the UX and smartness elements, we will confirm the effect of smartness as a part of holistic UXs and distinguish from generic UXs. The actual results of this study are expected to improve the UX or smartness of smart TVs, enhance user satisfaction, and ultimately help smart TV manufacturers and service providers.
