In situ observations of periodic porphyrins from the solution/Au(111) interface under UV light irradiation at molecular level고체-액체 계면에서 자가 조립된 포르피린 분자의 구조 및 전기적 특성에 관한 실시간 EC-STM 연구 : 자외선 조사에 의한 반응 분석

Tailoring molecular structure has been exploited for the manipulation of surface electronic property at interface. For example, the extensive efforts for the design of efficient intramolecular electron transfers have shown the potential applications of noncovalent thin-film by self-assembled monolayer (SAM) construction on the metal surfaces. However, the formation of long-range arrayed supramolecular architecture with such an electrochemical process in liquid phase is not fully understood at the molecular level yet. Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) technique is one of the powerful tools to investigate the morphological and electrical structures of the elaborated supramolecular surfaces at liquid interface that the in situ observation could engage unravel the mechanism of structural formation in early stage. Here, we observed the instant domain structure formations of free-base, copper(II) and nickel(II) octaethylporphyrin ($H_2OEP$, CuOEP and NiOEP) on Au(111) in dodecane solution. EC-STM images show not only close-packed arrays but also distorted domain boundaries of porphyrins. However, porphyrin molecules tend to form porphyrin islands and this trend is accelerated in the ultraviolet light irradiation ($\lambda = 365 nm$) during the molecular self-assembly process. Our results implicate that the intramolecular perturbations of electron transfer at transition metal center and porphyrin rings affect to surface morphological formations. We will discuss the relation between the role of periodic arrayed self-assembled monolayer structures by $H_2OEP$, CuOEP and NiOEP on Au(111) surface and the elaboration of electrical property to understand electrochemical processes at liquid/solid interface.
