The antibiosis properties of SiO2 evaporation on chemically strengthened glass with Ag+ ion and ZnO-coated glass for Zn-type antibacterial agent are studied in this paper. From standard tests of antibacterial products for antibacterial activity and efficacy, high antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are proven in the Ag+ ion strengthened glass for the SiO2-deposited layer up to 1 mu m thickness. Meanwhile, the evaluation results show that the ZnOcoated glass gives an antimicrobial activity (reduction rate of viable bacteria >99%) valid only against Staphylococcus aureus and for a SiO2 layer thickness of less than 100 nm. The study shows that antibacterial activity can be observed on the surface of the SiO2 layer, which indicates that the Ag and Zn ions penetrated through the SiO2 layer, as verified by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analysis along the depth profile of SiO2-deposited antibacterial glass.
