This paper considers a north directional imaging method for a low Earth orbit satellite. An Earth observation satellite normally utilizes a sun-synchronous orbit to maintain similar mission conditions for the imaging target. The sun-synchronous orbit has an orbital inclination angle which causes the ground track of the satellite to tilt from the north-south orientation. Furthermore, the Earth rotation makes the ground track not straight on the Earth's surface, which is the reason for yaw steering of Earth observing satellites. These factors make north directional imaging difficult. The north-south oriented image is valuable for image utilization. Many users require rectangular shape images in latitude and longitude. If this type of image is clipped from a general ortho-image, the image size might be smaller than the original image. This disadvantage can be resolved by north directional imaging. If the rectangular shape image is clipped from a north-south oriented image, the width of the image could be same as the swath width capability of the satellite. In this paper, we propose a north directional imaging method using yaw angle compensation. Using the geometry of the satellite orbit and ground track, a yaw compensation angle for the north-south oriented image is derived. The simulation results show that proposed north directional imaging method is applicable to any imaging mission with various orbital position and attitude of the satellite. The imaging results using the KOMPSAT-3A satellite show that north directional images can be successfully obtained by the proposed method.
