(A) model of narrative creation knowledge support from an information processing perspective

Abstract

Producing mature and valuable narratives is a key issue in the content industries such as film or TV drama. For that, it has been sought to apply information technology to narrative creation and various story development tools to support authors have been developed. However, these tools provide insufficient automatic and intelligent functions and cannot consider the cognitive process of actual authors and recipients. In this dissertation, I propose a new narrative creation support model that focuses on narrative information and agent’s knowledge from an information processing perspective. Assuming the narrative creation and acceptance as information processing mediated by the narrative text, I analyzed the author’s cognitive task made in the context of narrative communication. In this theoretical framework, I designed a narrative representation model to express the narrative structure and agent’s knowledge, and proposed various narrative analysis methods to grasp the state and characteristics of the narrative. Based on the model, I developed a prototype system with GUI that the author can iteratively manipulate the narrative representation and monitor the analysis results processed by the system. Then I evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed model through pilot study and case study, and I created a new narrative using the prototype system as a demonstration. Through interaction with the system based on the proposed model, the author can more effectively create a narrative to fit their plan.
