Location-based social Q&A: a study of naver KiN “Here”위치 기반 소셜 Q&A: 네이버 지식인 여기 연구

Smartphones enable convenient access to local information, but resolving everyday geographic information needs is still challenging (e.g., checking if a theme park is crowded). Location-based social Q&A aims at bridging this gap by directly tapping into the knowledge of local people. Several popular services include Naver KiN “Here”, LocalMind, and LocalUncle. However, our understanding of location-based social Q&A is limited. In this paper, we investigate Naver KiN “Here” by analyzing the crawled dataset and two supplementary surveys data from 285 mobile users, 1210 users respectively. Our data analysis reveals several unique characteristics of location-based social Q&A: factual questions dominate, askers tended to specify the reference location inaccurately on the map, unique motivators are found (self-efficacy regarding local knowledge, sense of attachment and sense of pride about local community), and answering activities are geographically focused on a few regions which strongly related to their home/work/school. Our main findings reported in the paper have significant implications for the design of location-based social Q&A systems.
